I spent yesterday afternoon with the McBride Library’s Writing Group. When I left the library and headed home, the photo above is what I saw. We had seen some smoke coming from the same area the day before, but obviously by Friday, the winds had come up and made the fire a lot worse. I rushed home and told my wife about all of the smoke and she replied that we should start thinking about collecting all our precious things in case we need to evacuate our house.
We live miles away from the smoke in the photo above, but on the same mountain slope. Eventually the fire move all across the left side of the photo above. As the fire moved closer to our house we could see that the smoke had become much thicker and darker. We started gathering everything we wanted to take with us, closer to the door, and I moved the truck closer to the house in case we had to load it up quickly.
As the smoke coming over the ridge intensified, we were visited by a RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) officer, who told us we had to evacuate. We quickly began packing the car and the truck with quilts, paintings, guitars, official papers, computers, photographs, and other of our valuable things. Lastly we then loaded up Kona and Lucifer, their food, and a litter box.
Our friends, the Milnes told us we could stay there if we needed to evacuate, and so, we said goodbye to our house, wished it luck, and left.
