The other day I noticed this strip of unmelted snow, then realized what has caused it. It was shade. In the afternoon, the sun beats down on this area, but the rail on the garden fence makes a shadow, preventing the sun from shining on this strip of snow, keeping it cool, which prevents it from melting.
I notice this same phenomena every spring on my driveway next to my shop. My shop shades part of the driveway, and it is usually one of the last areas of my yard to melt.
