I have no explanation as to why I have been lately blogging about outhouses, but I just came across this old 2014 blog, and thought it deserved another look.
A group of us had just begun a hike up to the top of Boulder Mountain. The first part of the hike was through a beautiful dark wooded area, rich in mosses that covered the ground. It was while going through this relatively flat area, before starting the climb up the slope, that I spotted this outdoor “toilet”. I was gobsmacked when I saw it. It was like no other toilet I had ever seen.
Normally in North America, outdoor toilets are called “outhouses”, but since outhouses have sides and a roof, I am not sure that this construction qualifies.
The whole idea of an outhouse is to provide a bit of privacy. That is what I don’t understand about this thing, since it doesn’t provide any privacy, why spend all the time and effort building it?
It seems like it would be a whole lot easier just to squat behind a tree.
