Periodically over the thirty-five years we have lived here, there have been occasions when for some reason or another, we have had to have a big truck come and do something for us. Usually it is to haul some new gravel for the driveway. It seems that whenever we need to have a big truck come, something goes haywire. Usually the big truck gets stuck.
Although it is not real noticeable, our property has a slight slope to it. We also have clay soil. If the truck is not on the driveway, it usually doesn’t take long for the tires of truck to start spinning when trying to go up that slight slope, and the treads on those tires quickly fill with clay from under the grass, rendering the the tires useless, and if the truck tries to proceed, it just gets itself dug in deeper.
Yesterday we had our septic tank emptied. The truck backed across our lawn to be close to the buried tank, and all went well until the task was done, and the truck tried to go back up to our driveway. Sitting on the damp grass on the slight incline quickly caused the tires to spin rendering them useless.
I thought that maybe if the truck backed down to the pasture which is more level, it might be able to get some grip and then some inertia and make it up to the driveway, but the tire treads where still level with clay and even in the pasture the truck couldn’t move forward.
Eventually to get up to our driveway, the driver had to put on tire chains so that the tires could get enough grip to go forward. I felt sorry for all the extra work that meant for Adam, but I guess he had been through similar situations before and stayed up-beat. That’s him under the truck putting on the tire chains in the photo below.
The tire chains worked and once Adam had driven back up our driveway and up onto the road, it took him a while to remove the tire chains, so he could get back home to family and supper.
