The night before last the temperature got down to freezing, which pretty much puts an end to our growing season. It wasn’t a killing frost, so there are still some green plants in the garden, but their time is limited. We actually had a long growing season this year. There have been years when the Robson Valley has gotten a killing frost in August.
My greenhouse is unheated, and the strip coroplast on the roof blew off at the end of August, so the greenhouse is no longer holding heat overnight very well. I figured I’d better get the remaining tomatoes and chilis out of the greenhouse before they were damaged by freezing. Our cooler daytime temperatures aren’t going to help them grow much from now on anyway. The photos show the tomatoes and chilis that I picked yesterday. As you can see I plant several varieties of both. They not only give me a spectrum of tastes, but they also make for colorful photos.
I still have some harvesting to do in the garden. I have about 6 rows of potatoes to dig, I need to strip off the ears of corn and pick some beans for seed, before they freeze. I am hoping that we get some drier weather before doing that. I always feel really “under the gun” to get those all those garden things done, before the temperature drops.
Picking and digging all of those crops now, does present some storage problems. I can freeze the chilis, but the tomatoes just need to sit in the house until they slowly ripen and can be used. Once I dig all of the potatoes, they need to sit for a couple of weeks in my shop, before I can store them under the house for winter. Keeping them in the shop for a couple of weeks allows me to see and throw away the ones that are going to rot, before I store them for the winter.
