The Lying Liar; The View From Canada

I don’t know where to begin.  Trump’s strategy of everyday flooding the media with so much misinformation that people can’t deal with it, is very effective.  There are just so many lies, one gets overwhelmed and doesn’t know where to start, which of course, is the goal, but one thing is clear, he wants to annex Canada to capture its resources.

His rants about fentanyl being the reason for the illegal tariffs (what happened to the “wonderful” Free Trade Agreement he fought for and signed during his first administration?) is just a ruse.  He needs  some sort of semi-legitimate sounding excuse to evoke this “emergency” for creating tariffs on Canada.  The amount of fentanyl that is smuggled into the US from Canada is only .04% of total which comes into the US.  If there is a smuggling problem, I would think that responsibility lies on the US Border Officials.

Trump says the US is “subsidizing” Canada because the US buys more products from Canada than Canada buys from the US.  Canada’s population is one-tenth of the US population.  Does Trump think the tiny Canadian  population must buy ten times as much US merchandize so the trade balance would be equal?  Where would Canadians put all of that stuff if they could buy it?

He calls the imbalance a “$200 billion subsidy” to Canada, sounding like the US is giving Canada $200 Billion.  The trade imbalance (which in December Trump said was $100 Billion, not $200 Billion) is because the US is buying products from Canada that they need  (things like oil, aluminum, lumber, etc).  It is not a subsidy, which is giving away money, it was a purchase for a product.  If you bought something in a store, that would not be a “subsidy”, it would be a purchase, because you got something for your money, but Trump saying it was a subsidy, is just a way to fire up people in the US to make them mad and make them think they have been getting cheated.

The real reason behind all of this tariff stuff is to make it harder for Canadian businesses to sell products in the US.  It is designed to make Canadian businesses to move to the US, so they won’t have to pay the tariffs.  If Canadian business move to the US, Canada’s workers and economy will begin to suffer and decline.  Trump hopes that the result of this economic warfare will be that after Canada is forced to our knees, we will want to become the 51st state, just like Trump has been saying.

Canada is the second biggest country in the world (the US is number 4).  Does Trump really expect to make the whole of Canada the 51st state, with just two Senators?  If the US allowed each province in Canada to become a state, it would radically change the US Congress, making it much more liberal, which of course, the Republicans would never allow.

Trump also has his eye on taking over Greenland for its minerals.

Trump has certainly changed the focus of the US, and I see so many parallels with the rise of Nazism in the 1930’s, and Hitlers eyeing of neighboring countries for their resources, and that didn’t fare well for the world.

Sorry for the rant, but I periodically have to get things off of my chest.
