As I write this there is a light snow falling, but it is still pretty evident that we are moving toward Spring. Yesterday I noticed the first green plants, bravely sticking their heads above ground. Above is a photo of hollyhock leaves. I have been really surprised at hollyhocks. I have only grown them for a handful of years. Since they grew at my childhood home in Indiana, I always assumed they were hot weather-loving plants, but they are tough and are among the first up in the spring, and hold on into the fall, up here in the Interior of BC.
The green sprouts below look like daffodils, but they usually come out a bit later. I will have to see wait and see what they develop into.
The fact that Winter is such a dominant season up here, makes everyone eager to see signs of Spring. Both of these plants are growing in a narrow flower garden right next to our house. That location gets direct sunlight, and having the wall of the house next to it generates more heat than in the rest of our yard, so things always come up there first.
