As I have mentioned my brothers and sisters, all of which live in urban environments, have come to the very rural Robson Valley to visit us. Although working was not the purpose of their trip, they have generously contributed time in their vacation to help us do some of our tasks. My brothers, Rob (above) and Roy (below) have helped me out; gathering, splitting, and stacking firewood.
Decades ago when they last visited, they split firewood using a splitting maul, a more physical endeavor. These days they are using an electrical splitter, to do the strenuous part of the splitting job. You hoist the piece of wood onto the splitter, press a button, and slowly the machine’s hydraulic mechanisms force a blade through the log, splitting it.
My sisters also demanded to be put to work. Jane went around washing all of our windows while Nancy donated time washing the piles of dishes that our dishwasher couldn’t accommodate. I have been amazed at all of the generous international free labor that has arrived at our doorsteps.
