1996 Arizona Road Trip: Monument Valley

We packed up and drove on to Monument Valley, whose majestic rock buttes we had seen dressing up many westerns and other Hollywood films including: Stagecoach,  The Searchers, Forrest Gump, and National Lampoon’s Vacation.  The closer we got to the Visitor Center, the more roadside vendors we encountered.  We stopped and checked out the wares of many of them.  One of the Native vendors  told us that they had experienced only two snowfalls that winter, one of only an inch.  It is the snow that gives them all of their yearly moisture, so he was really worried about his livestock.  The scenery was spectacular and we took a lot of photos.

We drove on to Mexican Hat and found a motel wedged on a ledge between a canyon wall and the San Juan River.  It was a wonderful location.  Our room cost us $38.  We had a snack at a table overlooking the river and later took a hike down to the river.   As the sun went down, we drove back to Monument Valley to get some shots of the buttes during the lighting of the “Golden Hour.”
