You might have heard or read that Frank Gehry, the famous Canadian/American architect, recently died. He is famous for his amazingly complex-looking buildings, with their curves, bends. and unexpected shapes. Among his most well-known structures are the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain and The Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles (photos).
One year we visited my brother and his family in LA, and he took us around to see the sights. Among those sights was the Disney Concert Hall. I confess very impressed with the extraordinary and beautiful building, inside and out.
While we were walking around inside, a strange thing happened to me. I was decked out in my usual camera gear as I wandered through the lobby looking at all the angles and beautiful surfaces, when I was approached by a well dressed employee, someone I didn’t know.
“David,” he said in a confident manner, “Come with me, this way.”
I didn’t have a clue as to what was going on, but since he seemed to know me, I followed him off, out of the lobby. He began talking to me, but I was confused and didn’t know what he was talking about.
We hadn’t gone far, when the employee looked over my shoulder and spotted another person who had suddenly appeared in the lobby. He too had a couple of cameras hanging around his neck.
At this point the official who was leading me away realized he had made a mistake. He suddenly had nothing to do with me, leaving me where I was, and quickly walking over to the other guy and led him away.
I think what had happened is this: The concert hall employee was waiting for a photographer, whose name happened to be David. He saw me and thought I was the photographer, so was leading me away. It was all a coincidence and a mistake.
I was a little miffed that the employee never apologized to me or explained, he just dropped me like a hot potato, and walked away.
The Disney Concert Hall is a really an interesting and complex looking bit of architecture, and I was sure happy that we had been able to see it.
