Canada Socks

This morning when I put on this sock, I noticed that it had a hole in the heel.

“Oh,” I thought, “A Canada sock.”

Every time I see a sock with a hole in it, I think of our good friends Wim and Ingeborg.

Wim and Ingeborg immigrated to Canada from Belgium, and lived in a house just down the road.  We enjoyed their company immensely and loved to hear the stories they told about the very different life they had lived in Belgium.

Wim grew up in a very wealthy family who lived in a mansion-like house on a large property that resembled an urban park.  However, Wim was different from everyone else in his family.  His parents and siblings seemed to be all involved with wealth, valuing fancy clothes, expensive cars, and all those other trappings of wealth.

In contrast, Wim and Ingeborg valued things like healthy outdoor activities like biking and hiking, and living close to nature, which is why they had moved to Canada.  They dressed like the rest of us living in the rural environment of the Robson Valley.

One time when Wim and Ingeborg had gone back to Belgium to visit their family, Wim’s mother noticed that one of the socks that Wim was wearing had a hole in it.  In a rather condescending voice she said, “Oh, you are wearing your Canada socks.”

I thought that was so funny, because I have a lot of Canada socks and usually wear them until the hole gets so big, it might cause trouble.

How about you?   Do you have any Canada socks?
