Squirrels always seem to figure out how to find a way to get what they want (in this case, sunflower seeds from the bird feeder). It looks like the squirrel chewed away part of the plastic frame around the hole in the feeder to gain entry to the sunflowers, then had itself a feast.
While I had seen the squirrel around, mostly on the ground under the bird feeder, I was surprised to find the villain inside the bird feeder. It seemed pretty amazing for it to get in there, but there it was.
I now have a different type of bird feeder; a tin cylinder that holds the seeds with a wide, smooth cone-shaped top that makes it difficult for a squirrel to jump on to. I have hung the feeder dangling down from a crossbeam between two trees to further discourage squirrels from getting at the bird’s sunflower seeds.
